Qwest

Can't Connect to Qwest

I can't connect to the Internet and I use Qwest.

There are three types of connections Qwest offers:

  1. DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines)
  2. T1
  3. QMOE (Metro Optical Ethernet) which is not covered in this answer

In the case of DSL service you will most likely have either a Cisco 675/678, ActionTec Router or a 2Wire Router. In the case of a T1 you will most likely have a Cisco 1700 Router. In either case cabling will lead back to a cable that looks like a phone cable (RJ-11). This is the piece of equipment you should inspect by doing the following:

  1. Check the router provided by Qwest for a WAN light. It should be green or flashing green intermittently. If it flickers at a high rate (more than 5 times a second) for more than 15 seconds at a time then it may be one of the following:
    1. You or someone on your network is downloading/uploading large files over the Internet. Check with others in your office to see if that is the case.
    2. You or someone on your network is using streaming video or streaming audio. Check with others on your network to see if this is the case. We strongly recommend against the use of streaming video and audio in the workplace as this can significantly impair your performance using the Internet, sharing files across your private network and printing large documents.
    3. You or someone on your networking might have a virus or trojan. In that case make sure your Antivirus program is up to date. For more help on this check our Security Center.
  2. If the light is red or not lit you should turn off the equipment and turn it back on. For some equipment you may need to physically pull the power cord (this will not harm the equipment). Also allow about 30 seconds before turning the equipment back on or plugging it back in.
  3. After about 5 minutes if the WAN light is red or is not lit up then you need to contact Qwest for further assistance.
